PMDPA represented at the 121st Annual Convention & Scientific Assembly of the NMA

The Palmetto Medical, Dental & Pharmaceutical Association was represented at the NMA Annual meeting in New Orleans, La on July 29-August 2, 2023 by delegates Lindsey Crumlin, Jr. MD, Rodney Reid, MD, Dennis Wilson, MD and Gerald Wilson, MD. The theme for the meeting was “Accelerating the March Toward Health Equity.” In the House of Delegates, Dr. Gerald Wilson served on the Committee on Public Health and Consumer Affairs reporting on resolutions that dealt with issues such as gun violence, maternal health, suicide prevention and Black physician burnout.

Dr. Reid and Dr. Gerald Wilson also represented the Palmetto in the NMA Region III meetings. As a result of their participation, Dr. Rodney Reid has been named the interim Trustee to the NMA Board representing Region III. It is anticipated that he will be voted by the board to that position at its next meeting. The Region III meeting was also privileged to have the new Executive Director, Joy D. Calloway, MHSA, MBA come and outline her plans for increasing membership, streamlining operations and assisting the board to strengthen the NMA.

Dr. Garfield Clunie, a maternal-fetal specialist from New York and the 123rd President of the NMA has put in place a strategic plan in response to gun violence in America. As outgoing president, he assured that the committee has been assigned a specific time for response to the NMA board. The new President of the NMA, Yolanda M. Lawson, MD, an obstetrician-gynecologist at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, Tx has outlined her priorities for the coming year to include women’s health particularly in view of multiple states moving to restrict access to health care.

The editor of the Journal of the National Medical Association, Dr. Edith Mitchell strongly recommends using the online version of the Journal because the more it is used, the more financially sound it becomes.
