Addressing Health Equity in the Pee Dee
The South Carolina Cancer Alliance held a Health Equity Evidence Academy: “Addressing Health Equity in the Pee Dee” on March 5, 2022 at Florence-Darlington Technical College Southeastern Institute of Manufacturing and Technology.
Two members of the PMDPA participated on the program.
Dr. Burnett Gallman gave an intriguing lecture titled “Misplaced Mistrust?: Afrikan Americans and the American Sickcare System.” It was an in-depth examination of the history prior to and through our experience with health care. It included the advances made by our ancestors and the barriers we have faced and continue to face in our current health care system.
Dr. Gerald Wilson, who chairs the SC Cancer Alliance, gave a lecture on “Addressing Health Equity in the Pee Dee Region.” This pointed out the particular problems faced by a rural area of the state which has been consistently noted for its higher than average rates of chronic disease. Recommendations were made for providers and recipients to improve health care.
The event was well attended by the public, legislators, and health care students from Florence-Darlington Technical College and Francis Marion University.
